Masterclass
Brazilian Soul
ROOM: Hall - Drum Set TIME: 18:00 DATE: 18 September
BRAZILIAN SOUL is a drum clinic based on Vera Figueiredo’s “Vera Cruz Island – Brazilian Rhythms for Drumset”. Launched by Hudson Music, this book is a fusion between traditional and contemporary rhythmic styles, with rhythms and melodies flowing in a very natural way. This clinic is like a photo album of Vera’s soul: intense, full of beautiful Brazilian landscapes which can be heard in her music. Go on a journey through Brazil by simply closing your eyes. Vera plays her solos in ostinato on the tracks´ riffs, pulsing in two beats. An example of what is going to happen during the clinic is the song Saudade: a samba in 3/4 and 2/4. Vera plays a solo at the end of this song making an interesting 3 against 2 feel and a double time. Vera will approach the following subjects:
SAMBA
Applying exercises from the book Stick Control (by George Lawrence Stone) to Samba language.
Playing the Samba Telecoteco and its variations.
Bass Drum and Hi-Hat variations.
Different Samba snare grooves applied to the drumset: emulating the drum section of an Escola de Samba (Samba School).
BAIÃO
Its origin and how to play and develop it.
Bass Drum and Hi-Hat Variations.
PLAYING SONGS AND TALKING ABOUT GROOVES
Samba Reggae
Maracatu
Ijexá
